POSTOPERATIVE IRRADIATION EFFECT OF Co-60 ON THE PATENCY OF MICRO VASCULAR ANASTOMOSES OF FEMORAL VESSELS IN RATS

Abstract
The femoral vessels of one side in 90 rats mere cut and reanastomosed using microvascular surgical technique followed by external local irradiation over the previously operated site with Co-60 Unit, 1.25 MeV., SSD 90cm in a fractionated dose corresponding 3600 rads in 3 weeks and 5400 rads in 4 1/2 weeks.
These two experimental groups mere subdivided into 4 subgroups in each according to the interval between the microvascular anastomoses and the start of the external irradiation.
Two months after the completion of the irradiation. The same femoral vessels mere evaluated for patency and histologic changes.
There was no notable effect of the external local irradiation on the patency after the anastomoses of these femoral vessels in rats. But the radiation effect was obvious on histological examination which showed the sloughing of the endothelial cells, intimal hyperplasia, hyalinization on tunica media and fibrosis on tunical media and adventitia of femoral arteries.
But these histolgical changes on the vein mere mild and not typical.
